Different Types of Capacitors For Fan Motors And Definition of Run Capacitor

The main function of a capacitor is to store electricity or electrical energy. It also works as a filter which allows AC current to flow through the passage of DC current. It has two electrode plates which are placed parallel to each other and then it is separated by an inductor or insulator. When it is fully charged, the current stops flowing through the capacitor. Here are different types of Fan Motor Capacitors which are used in fan motors such as: 

 

Metalized film capacitors:

 

These types of film capacitors are used in motors of air conditioning system which has two capacitors. The first capacitor is used in the compressor motor and the second one is used with the fan motor. These capacitors have thin electrodes of aluminium foil which is interlinked with a thin plastic dielectric. This plastic can be replaced with other materials such as polyster where high voltage capacitors are needed. 

 

Ceramic capacitors:

 

Ceramic capacitors are used in automotive and air conditioning system because of its high capacitance and high voltage. This type of Motor Run Capacitor consists of a thin ceramic dielectric which is metalized on each side which are coated with a protective layer and dipped in electrified protective material to become thick. 

 

Ceiling fan capacitors:

 

These types of Fan Motor Capacitors are used in ceiling fans. These are made of two conductors which are separated by a dielectric. When voltage is detected by two conductors, electrical energy is stored in the capacitor. This electrical energy rises the mechanical force. Ceiling fans need these capacitors because it converts energy to mechanical power and helps the blade running. If a fan is running slowly or not at all, then it is due to a malfunctioning or damaged capacitor. This capacitor may stop working, if the speed setting are not working or when it needs manual rotation for it to start working. 

 

What is run capacitor?

 

Some of the single phase AC electric motors require Motor Run Capacitor for energizing the second phase winding for creating a rotating magnetic field while the motor is running. Run capacitors are specially designed for continuous duty when the motor is powered and this is the reason why electrolytic capacitors are avoided and low loss polymer capacitors are used.  If a wrong capacitance value is installed, it may cause uneven magnetic field around the rotor. It makes the rotor to hesitate at any uneven spots which may result in irregular rotation. Sometimes this hesitation make the motor to become noisy , increase energy consumption which cause performance dropped and it may overheat the motor.
